‘Regular exercise promotes good health, wellness’

Discussants on the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta radio station, FUNAAB Radio 89.5FM live interactive programme, Boiling Point, have appealed to all employers of labour in the country to allow their workers to recreate, saying regular exercise would reduce the frequency at which people visit hospitals. According to the Director, Directorate of Sports of FUNAAB, Dr. Samuel Olabanji, there are lots of physical and health benefits derivable from brisk walking, adding that walking is an act of exercise, and when people engage in walking, they add more values to their lives.
He disclosed further that there are various reasons for people moving from one place to another, saying “there is brisk or controlled walking, as well as uncontrolled walking”, adding that “controlled walking is under the instruction of a professional or exercise instructor”. On his part, the Acting Director, FUNAAB Health Services, Dr. Oluseyi Anjorin, said brisk walking has an advantage, stressing that “it is one of the ways in which people keep fit, and it has to be done regularly”, while reiterating that brisk walking has a guideline, “which is 100 steps per minute, and has to be done within 30 minutes.”
The guests also thanked the University management, led by Prof. Olusola Kehinde, for throwing its weight behind the ‘Walk for Life’ programme, organised by both directorates for staff members of the University, adding that the programme would continue to hold 2nd and 4th Wednesday of every month between 8 and 8:30am in the morning. They, however, enjoined the University staff members to come out enmass with optimism that when they do, they would make it a continuous exercise.
