Why Nigerians Should Always Adhere to COVID-19 Protocols
A Principal Medical Officer at the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta (FUNAAB) Health Services, Dr. Oluseyi Anjorin, has advised Nigerians to continue to adhere to the non-pharmaceutical precautions against Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) so as to stem the scourge of the Omicron variant. Dr. Anjorin gave this charge while featuring on FUNAAB Radio 89.5FM live interactive programme, Boiling Point. He described COVID-19 as a viral disease, warning that medically, Omicron may not be the last to come. He said the government had tried to address the challenge by providing vaccines, but when compared with the nation’s population, the quantity of available vaccines may not be adequate, appealing to Nigerians to make do with the available vaccines. According to him, “It was the Delta strain that the whole world was complaining about, but the Omicron came and I am sure others may still come”.
Dr. Anjorin stressed that COVID-19 pandemic came and shook the whole world, admitting that beyond the orthodox medicine, God had been faithful to Nigeria and Africa as a whole. He said when people compare the number of cases to the number of deaths recorded in Nigeria, as against the Western world, they would have every cause to thank God. Dr. Anjorin opined that the nation’s health system was almost moribund, adding that Nigeria’s healthcare professionals were migrating to other countries with better health care facilities. He further highlighted some of the factors affecting the country’s health care system to include poor welfare, unprofessional services, unfavourable working environment, and inadequate facilities. “When you find a better welfare package elsewhere and you have the opportunity to move, you move”, he observed while advising that people should stop blaming the government because Nigerians were equally culpable for the present challenge facing the health sector.
